Blog Tour: Migration Event – K.C. Gillis Extract.

It’s me again, bringing you another stop on an awesome Zooloos Book Tours tour! Today we’re featuring Migration Event by K.C. Gillis, and I have the pleasure of bringing you an extract. Before we get to the extract, let me introduce you to the author, and the book itself.

K.C. (Kevin) Gillis is the author of the Jordan Reed mystery series. Despite being a lifelong lover
of stories and books, writing took a distant back seat as his professional career travelled through
the Canadian Air Force, a decade as a chemist, followed by a long and continuing run in
corporate America. With writing no longer in the back seat (but not quite yet in the front seat),
Kevin now has the Jordan Reed series well underway. His personal interests focus on endurance
and water sports. Having grown up in the Canadian Maritimes, he now lives in the US northeast.

Now let’s have a look at the book:

Environmental destruction. Tax evasion. When reporter Jordan Reed uncovers a link, will she meet a fatal deadline?

Jordan Reed lives to expose criminals who believe they’ll never get caught. So after receiving a tip about a high-profile company dodging tariffs, the relentless journalist digs into the case. But though her lead turns out to be a red herring, a possible connection to the mysterious death of long-distance migratory birds pulls her into a byzantine maze of corruption and pollution.

Joining forces with a rogue conservationist, Jordan infiltrates the inner circle of one of Boston’s top corporate citizens. But when she and her new teammate find themselves surrounded by high-powered enemies, her hunt for the truth could force the coverup of their own murders.

Will the tenacious reporter live long enough to write the ultimate exposé?

Migration Event is the third book in the thrilling Jordan Reed mystery series. If you like powerful female protagonists, threats around every corner, and unexpected twists, then you’ll love K.C. Gillis’s edge-of-your-seat tale.

It’s the time you’ve all been waiting for; Extract time!

Jordan leaned back in her chair, her workday basically done. She had updated the tasks
assigned to her for a story she cared little about and could now shut down the computer and
head out. The beep of her phone, signaling an incoming text, interrupting her plan:
“Jordan it’s Frankie…it’s been a while. I’ve got something 4U…can U talk?”
Who the hell is Frankie?
Jordan thought the text must have been a mistake. She couldn’t think of someone
named Frankie who’d text her. She was considering blocking the sender and deleting the text
when it hit her.
Shit. He’s that customs broker who threatened me when I worked on the skin-cream
story.
Jordan thought back to when she’d broken into the office of a guy selling poisoned skin
creams. She had been trapped by the seller and a guy who worked for Frankie, but she had
managed to get away in one piece. Barely. This Frankie guy apparently had some customs
racket at the airport. He’d help clients get stuff through customs without the usual
inspections. Jordan’s investigation had created some risk for his special business.
She’d made a deal with him to keep his involvement out of her story, primarily in
exchange for her safety. But in the process, Jordan had somehow convinced him that he owed
her a tip in the future. It didn’t really matter what it was about, just anything Frankie saw and
thought she might find interesting. He had agreed to do so within six months. That was a
couple of years ago.
At the time, Jordan had thought she was pretty smooth to get Frankie to agree. She’d
even expected him to follow through. When he hadn’t, Jordan felt used. But not enough to go
back to him. After all, she’d gotten out of that mess without getting hurt. And the story had
landed her a full-time job at the Courant.
The memory of her escape from one of Frankie’s guys and his subsequent visit to her
apartment made her shudder. The safe play now would be to politely decline to reconnect.
She knew she couldn’t just ignore him. Frankie wasn’t the kind of guy who people ignored.
She might be able to get away with a “thanks, but no thanks.”
Before deciding what to do, she finished packing up her stuff, glancing at the computer
screen where she had been making meager contributions to another reporter’s story. Blowing
off Frankie would guarantee at least several more days of monotonous fact-checking. Maybe
longer.
What’s the worst that could happen?
